Surface Prep & Moisture Testing

Urethane coatings are prized for their durability, flexibility, and chemical resistance—but choosing and applying them correctly is key to maximizing performance. Whether you’re sealing a concrete floor in a warehouse, hospital, or retail space, urethane can provide long-term protection with minimal maintenance when installed properly.

In this article, we’ll break down tips for selecting the right urethane system, how to prep surfaces effectively, and what to watch for during installation.

Summary

Steps

1. Know the Difference: Water-Based vs. Solvent-Based

Water-based urethanes are ideal for interior, low-odor settings, while solvent-based versions deliver enhanced hardness and gloss for industrial or exterior use.

2. Check Moisture & CSP

Ensure the concrete substrate is dry and meets the required CSP (Concrete Surface Profile), usually CSP 3 or higher for most urethane applications.

3. Prime if Needed

Use a compatible epoxy or urethane primer to promote adhesion and reduce pinholes on porous surfaces.

4. Apply at Proper Thickness

Follow manufacturer guidelines for mil thickness—typically 2–3 mils per coat. Applying too thick can cause bubbling or soft curing.

5. Allow for Proper Cure Time

Avoid traffic before the full cure—usually 24–72 hours depending on the system. Fast-cure urethanes may allow quicker turnaround but require more precision during application.

6. Mix Thoroughly and Let Induct

Always mix part A and B fully and allow for the recommended induction time to ensure chemical activation.

7. Use Anti-Slip Additives Where Needed

In high-traffic or wet areas, incorporate aluminum oxide or quartz for added slip resistance.

8. Maintain Cleanliness for Longevity

Once installed, regular cleaning with pH-neutral products will help preserve gloss and performance over time.
